2003 TJ AWD gearbox noise

Hi guys,

My 2003 TJ AWD has a gear whine. It seems to occur only in 3rd, so I'm assuming it is the gearbox itself. It has gradually gotten worst over the last few thousand km, but has been there longer (perhaps 10,000km). The car has done 84000 km, and I only drive in tiptronic mode.

Has anyone experienced similar? Is it likely to be terminal / expensive? Can anyone recommend a transmission specialist in the Brisbane area?

If i was you id get it down to a transmission specialist or Mitsubishi garage soon.
Depending on what you call a whine, mine developed a similar noise just before the gearbox let go.
Since yours has been making the noise it might not be as serious, but still you might wanna get it looked at before it becomes a real problem.

One a side note, do you have a transmission cooler? If you always drive it around in tiptronic mode they are a brilliant idea, will increase the life of your trans and along with a fluid change help keep the gearbox running like new.
